City on the Water

Inspiration As my inspiration I used the Angela Pozzi’s Washed Ashore project, where Angela Pozzi collected pollution that washed up on the beaches in Portland, Oregon area and created sea creatures out of it. Angela Pozzi is a sculptor who was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Her most popular object is Washed Ashore which is the one that I chose as my inspiration. I chose this as my inspiration because I like sculptures themselves but also the meaning behind them which is very important to me. When I found out that these sculptures are made out of garbage that washed up on the shore of a beach I had mixed emotions. I felt good that this material was being used for good that it was being used to raise awareness of pollution but I was also sad that there was that much pollution on just one beach. That is what Angela Pozzi's intent was when creating these sculptures was for the viewer to have mixed emotions when looking at her sculptures and knowing the story behind them. In Angela Pozzi's Washed ashore project she used many different elements when creating them but the one she uses most is shape because she uses plastic from the beach and uses certain shapes to create these animals. Planning I made many planning sketches when I was planning out this project. My first two sketches were to see where I wanted to go with this project and to see what went well. After I had those two sketches complete, I decided to go with the water bottles on the beach. I chose this one because this project was about connecting to the community and this one was better connected to the community. After I chose what sketch I liked, I refined my idea and landed on cutting out famous buildings from Milwaukee to connect it to the community more. After I had my refined sketch complete I was ready to start making my art piece. Process After I knew what I wanted to do I could start making my object. I started by taking two old milk jugs and cutting them up to get as many flat pieces as I could. Thankfully I got enough plastic from the two milk jugs to do what I wanted for this project. After I had my flat pieces cut up, I started putting outlines of where I was going to cut to create my mini buildings. After I had my outlines complete I got scissors and cut them out. After I had my buildings cut out I had to make something they would stick in the sand to make the buildings stand. I decided to add plastic stakes to the bottom of the buildings to keep them in place. I connected the stakes to the buildings with hot glue because I thought that would be the strongest thing I could use. After I had my stakes connected to the buildings I was ready to go to the beach and take my photo. After I had my object done I went to the beach during the sunrise to try to make the photo look better. But when I got to the beach it was overcast and looked like it was going to rain. When I was at the beach the Honen bridge, art museum and the stake for the clock tower broke because of the wind at the beach. The photo didn't look how I wanted to so I brought the photos that I did have to Jason Yi who was helping us with this art piece and he suggested that I add smaller buildings in between the big ones to make the skyline better. He also suggested that I take that photo later in the day because the shadows were add to the photo. I took what Jason Yi said and I started making the buildings to make the skyline seem more full I also connected all of the building together to make it more stable because when I went to the beach the first time the wind destroyed three of the buildings. I decided to scrap the Honen bridge because I thought it looked the worst and because it was going to be hard to fit in the new skyline. I fixed the art museum and the clock tower too. After I made all of those it was time to go back to the beach and take another photo. I went to the beach again but this time I went during the middle day to get the shadows that I was going for. When I got to the beach I saw the reflection that the sun was making on the water which made me angle my object towards that reflection and also angled the camera . I angled my object and the camera because I wanted to capture the beauty of the lake. I wanted to make the lake look as best as possible because I wanted to show the viewer what pollution was destroying and how pollution was affecting the lake. After I had my photo taken I had to buy it into Photopea to switch its dimensions. When I took my photo it didn't have an actual dimensions because it was only on the camera and on my phone. I exported my photo into Photopea and changed the dimensions to 18 inches by 22 inches. I didn't change anything about the photo like lighting and other things because I want the photo to look real and I didn't want to change the beauty that the beach has. After I changed my dimensions my project was complete. Reflection Based on how this project went and how the final product came out I would say this project was a success. I say this because I took all of the steps and went through the process. I did this by going out to the beach and trying to take my photos and see what went well and what didn't do as well. After I knew all of these things I did everything again but I fixed everything I didn't like about the first attempt and created a final product that I was happy and proud of. What is most important to me about my art that I create is that I'm proud of it and that's why I think I succeeded in this piece. Critique Comparing my artwork to my inspiration, there are many similarities and differences between these two pieces. One of the biggest similarities between these two artworks is that the material used to make the object in my photo and the sculptures that Angela Pozzi created. Both of these things were created with plastic. Pozzi made it out of plastic on the beach and I made mine out of plastic from old milk jugs. Pozzi used plastic front the beach to clear the beach I used milk jugs to connect to Wisconsin which is known as the Dariyland. The biggest difference between my art work and Pozzi's work is the media type. Pozzi's artwork is a 3-D sculpture while my is photo based artwork. Experimentation I experimented with many things during this project like the photo and because I have never used this plastic for an art project before. I experimented with the time of the day in the photo because I wanted to try to make the beach look the best it could. I went during the morning the first time around because I thought it would be good during the sunrise. The next time I went to the beach I went near mid day because I wanted to see how the shadows from the plastic would look but also because of the sun reflecting off the water would make it look nice. After I went to the beach both of these times I decided on the mid day one because I thought it looked better and better captured the beach. Another thing I experimented with was the to show land in the photo or to not which in the end I did because I feel like it's better to see some of Milwaukee because if I didn't it would be hard to tell and it could be any beach. The last thing I experimented with was how to connect the pieces of plastic together because they would fall apart because they were too smooth to just connect with hot glue. I found this out when I went to the beach the first time because I only used hot glue to connect the plastic together which didn't work because the wind was too strong and broke some of my buildings. The way I fixed this problem was to score both of the plastic pieces which is a method that is very popular in connecting clay together. After I scored both pieces I then hot glued them which made them much stronger because it gave the hot glue something to stick to. ACT Questions Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork. There is a clear relationship between my inspiration and my artwork because of the materials used to make the main object in both artworks. Both my inspiration and my artwork's main object is made out of plastic. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The author has a overall good approach when it comes to the topic of my inspiration because the artist cleaned up the beach to get her materials and the author was thankful and respected the artist for that. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration? I drew the conclusion that pollution was affecting the beaches of Portland, Oregon which is why Angela Pozzi stepped in and is now doing her part in fixing the beaches. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The main theme around my inspiration was helping clean the beach which connects to my theme of the environment because both of them want to help nature. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? The inference that I made while researching my inspiration was that Angela Pozzi cared about the environment and saw what she was doing was important. I agreed with this because I also see her art has helping the environment and important.
